The importance of incentivising ALL staff

As we keep hearing, nearly every businesses in the UK now operates in a very tough competitive and economic environment. Companies are competing for anything from finance to market share, and information to top quality staff.

Historically, most firms have relied on financial incentives to motivate their employees. Traditionally, travel incentives and ad hoc promotions have featured when teams or individuals have demonstrated superior performance.

However, when employees under perform, they tend to be overlooked, with most companies still focusing on getting the most from their top performers. Why is this?

When the top 20% of performers account for 50% of the revenue, this seems to make sense. But when you consider that the bottom 80% of performers still account for 80% of the wage bill, surely improving the performance of this group and actively engaging them ought to be a business critical priority?
