Beautiful Belgium in classic cars!

Until I visited Belgium the other week as part of a FAM trip laid on for Pickled Egg by the Belgian Tourist Office and Brussels Airlines, I’d never given the country more thought beyond its capital Brussels. OK, I’ve watched the film In Bruges, and that looked nice, but that was far as it went.

So, you could say that I was very pleasantly surprised to discover how beautiful the Belgian countryside is. We started off in Rhode-Saint-Genèse, where we picked up our classic cars for the trip. Johnny and I hopped in a 1960s Triumph TR4 and, with the roof down, we hit the road.

Over the next few days, despite some iffy navigation, we visited some incredible hotels and chateaux, including the Manoir de Lébioles, Chateau de la Poste and the Dolce La Hulpe. We were treated to old-fashioned and contemporary European grandeur.

What was truly incredible was the location of many of these places. They were set within grounds that would make you think they were miles away from the hustle and bustle of any modern city, but were in fact only a short-ish drive from Brussels.

Of course, having classic cars in which to sweep the southern Belgian countryside was fantastic, especially as the sun shone on us almost uninterruptedly. As well as the Triumph, we were lucky enough to get behind the wheel of a very special 1950s Alfa Romeo Spyder (my favourite – I want one!) and an early edition MGA. There was also a trip to the famous Spa Francorchamps circuit.

We left after three days thoroughly impressed by what we’d seen. Or we would have left if it hadn’t been for some volcanic ash. We got home eventually, but that’s a whole other Pickled Egg blog.
